DESCRIPTION
WATERPROOF JOINT SEALANT
VULKEM 116 is a one-component, moisture-curing, gun-applicable polyurethane sealant. VULKEM 116 is durable, flexible and provides excellent action on moving joints. Vulkem 116 does not require a primer for most construction materials.
MAIN APPLICATIONS
VULKEM 116 is an excellent general purpose sealant designed for use in precast, masonry, window frames and other similar construction joints. VULKEM 116 is suitable for continuous immersion in water and is designed for interior and exterior use.
LIMITATIONS
Do not apply on wet or contaminated surfaces.
Use with adequate ventilation

Meets US Federal Specifications TT-S-00230C, Type II, Class A and ASTM C920, Type S, Grade NS, Class 25, Uses NT, M, T, A, O, and CAN/CGSD-19.13-M87. USDA approved.
APP
Joint Design
It can be used in any vertical or horizontal joint, designed according to standard architectural or engineering practices. The thickness of the joint must be 4 times the anticipated displacement. The displacement must not exceed 25% of the minimum thickness of the joint.
Joint Dimensions
For joints between ¼ – ½” (6.4 – 12.7mm) wide, the thickness/depth ratio must be the same. Joints ½” (12.7mm) or larger must have a sealant depth of at least ½” (12.7mm). The minimum size of the joint must be ¼” by ¼” (6.4mm by 6.4mm).
Surface Preparation
For good adhesion, the joint must be clean and dry. If release agents, masonry waterproofing agents, dust, loose mortar, or architectural paints are present, the joint surface may require brushing, sanding, grinding, cleaning with a solvent, and/or the application of a primer.
Cleaning and finishing
Finishing is recommended immediately after placement to ensure firm and intimate joint contact. Dry finishing is preferably recommended. Excess sealant on or adjacent to the joint can be carefully removed with Xylene or Toluene before the product has cured.
Joint filler
Bond Breaker Tape: Polyethylene Backer Rods are recommended for backing to control joint thickness. Where joint thickness precludes the use of joint filler, an adhesive polyethylene tape should be used to prevent trilateral bonding. Joint filler must be dry at time of sealant application.
App
VULKEM 116 is easy to apply with conventional caulking equipment. Fill the joint completely and finish. At 75ºF (24ºC), and 50% RH, a durable layer forms within 24 hours. Curing continues at a rate of 1/16” (1.6mm) thickness per day. Cure speed is reduced at lower temperatures and lower humidity.
Maintenance
Damaged sealant can be repaired. Consult your Tremco products distributor or SPC, SA Technical Assistance Department for repair procedures.
