SECURING THE COMPLETION OF SPLICING

 

When a rebar is connected to the Smart Coupler with minimum hand pressure, not only you would hear a ‘Click’, but also feel the completion of coupling. This eliminates the possibilities of incomplete splicing without quality control.

WHY COUPLERS ARE NECESSARY

 

In construction, typical ways to splice rebar after rebar incur :

 

  • Rebar loss from overlapping
  • Structural defects
  • Lack of independent structural support in case of earthquake or natural disaster (Lap Joint method prohibited in Japan)

 

Due to above reasons, typical methods of rebar splicing are being replaced by Mechanical Splicing System, such trend prevalent in most developed countries

PROBLEMS OF EXISTING COUPLERS

 

Problems of the existing couplers (Threaded Splices and Wedge Splices, etc.) include :

Incompleteness: It is difficult for workers to anticipate the timing of completion as they need to continuously apply force to tighten the threaded splice; this causes the need for control and increase in consequential costs.

Ineffectiveness: It requires additional craftspersons with specific tools to work for over 60 seconds.

 

LIMITATIONS

 

It is not readily applicable to difficult splicing construction surface, such as floor (horizontal), beam, and wall sections, requiring extra time and labor.

 

UNDERSTANDING THE TECHNOLOGY

 

As for the existing types of mechanical coupler, rebar is locked by the joint with the groove of the coupler. But since rebar joint’s width, height and pitch varies by manufacturer, it is difficult to expect consistent tensile strength from the existing types. When rebar is inserted to the ‘Smart Coupler’, the center of plastic holder (30) breaks through and the inner shell (20) strongly grasps not only the joint, but also the body and rib of rebar with its sharp teeth(21). This mechanism allows to perfectly grip all kinds of rebar and results in steady tensile strength regardless of rebar type, manufacturer or country of origin.
